The Griffin Cosmos

Brian made his name shooting album covers for everyone from Iggy Pop to Depeche Mode, Queen and Kate Bush to name but a few. We talked about his collection, about tour fatigue and we even discussed how his initial work necessitated Polaroid backs which ended up signed by their artistic subjects and most likely in the collection of any number of lucky assistants. The mind boggles.

600 Slugs Below

It was only natural that I would be drawn like a fuzzy, ill-formed moth to Jim Guthrie’s haunted score for Capybara’s ‘Below’. He worked on the thing for five years. Possibly using a PS1 and MTV Music Maker. I find myself somewhat in awe.

Space Inversion

The 1970s were a pivot point, or could have been and I get their frustration and anger at the senseless, arbitrary greed of it all. It grinds the molars now more than ever. The advent of photography placed the means by which everybody and their grandmother could, with less than little attention paid to their own artistic ability - to paraphrase Isaac Asimov and his wonderful forward to ‘SX-70 Art’, edited by Ralph Gibson and published by Lustrum in 1979 - make the world stand still.
