Mama's Brownies

Mama's Brownies

Nico died today. Not my Nico; our Nico. The Velvet One. My tracklist has been dominated all morning and Warhol’s ‘Chelsea Girls’ is queued up for thisevening’s entertainment. To die at forty-nine is one thing. To have accomplished so much in such a short space of time is another. By all accounts, she did not make life easy for herself and there exists a fair-sized footnote concerning addiction, worrisome relationships and problematic world views, many of which came to light following her death on this day in July, 1988. Still, to have had such an imprint on the likes of Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, and Morrissey - who placed her right up alongside New York Dolls, Frank Sinatra, and The King - that’s something. Music is not without its perils, it would seem. Success neither.

I’m not sure why I have inherited it but can only assume I have entered into some kind of pact

Andy was in the shop for a while not long ago, on his knees as though in twisted prayer, head firmly wedged behind the Rosita. I shall refrain from repeating what he was actually doing back there, for it would be unspeakable in even the darkest of rooms. I heard only faint whispers and the air became…heavy for a time. Then it passed, as though a shadow had passed. Upon parting, he gifted me with this, the most sturdy of vintage box cameras. It’s a 620 Brownie E Model, made by Kodak, circa 1953-57. I’m not sure why I have inherited it - we may have spoken about it one evening in The Behave - but can only assume I have entered into some kind of pact with his unquiet god. Something has been traded or altered or shifted. That being the case, I see no reason to not source film for the thing and capture some souls. The skin cloth that covers my unaccounted orb has been lifted. This man, this guy is the most helpful person on the Internet and I owe him what is left of my misspent spirit.

‘Robot Stop’ isn’t messing around and proves to be an accurate summation of the record that follows.

I ordered King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s ‘Nonagon Infinity’ (Heavenly Recordings / PIAS, 2016) at the same time as I ordered that savage one. It has been suggested by a group of my peers that I am on a noise binge but I can’t really recall a time when I haven’t been. You could call it a diet, I guess. This offering is certainly of a more face-meltingly psychedelic flavour and that is evident from the sleeve art alone. I have been pouring over the track list all morning and there is definitely something technomantic here also. I should probably play it to Andy but my suspicion is that he will have already consumed. ‘Robot Stop’ isn’t messing around and proves to be an accurate summation of the record that follows. They are all about the lizards and/or wizards so there is a joint brand synchronicity, which is how I spell optimal. O, P, T, I, M, A L. Optimal. If I have one regret, it would be that this isn’t pressed to 180 and I feel like it deserves to be. There must be one out there and I suspect it would feel louder, which is what I apparently crave.

Mama Finchy has defeated all, perched frog-like atop a teetering pile of malformed skulls.

The finale of RKG’s first season of Retry on Yoobtwoo, featuring the merciless creation that is ‘Dark Souls 2’ has happened and now we await what comes next. It was a masterclass in “banter”, the kind that I can actually enjoy. I may even have lost my drink over it on three different counts. The death toll on this one was either impressive, horrific or both. I include it above, if that’s what you’re after but I do advise you to start in the best of places. Of course, this was a far cry from being their first rodeo - them being the fiends behind IGN’s Prepare To Try series and this being their new kingdom of bone - and I have been watching them from the gloom for some time. Mama Finchy has defeated all, perched frog-like atop a teetering pile of malformed skulls. She proves, unequivocally (should there ever have been any malingering, residual doubt) that things can always get weirder, if you want them too. I have enjoyed their time in Drangleic and am glad that we got to go there together eventually, even if it was by a somewhat circuitous path. I look forward to further adventures. I sense the call of a distant bell, cherry blossom drifts from the East and there are rumours of an outsize serpent..

and other things that would be better with heads.
