The Black Year Tape
It is the season directly adjacent to the sun. If you are not adverse to oysters then Blandford Comptoir has your afternoon nailed down tight. Normally, I sit at the bar and bury my head in a book over half a dozen but sitting outside is also a whole kettle of pleasant, particularly if you catch aforementioned sun coming down the street at whatever the hour. I once asked Mr. P at what point they killed the oyster, seeing as how they are quite raw and the opposite of cooked. He promised to tell me, once I’d devoured the one I was holding at that particular moment.
We had a copy of this in the shop just before Christmas and it disappeared off the shelf mere moments after I’d stuck a tag on it. That shouldn’t be surprising. Mary Ellen Mark was an incredible photographer who took stunning photos of interesting people. Her subjects are often on the fringes of society and she never shied away from comparing and contrasting those both with and without. This copy of ‘25 Years’ was most reasonably priced (hence why I ordered it) and so I was not expecting it to be anything special, in and of itself. But here we are and it’s a first edition, passing rare. Praise be to careless hand and eye, there but for the grace etc,.
There is a new trailer for the fifth season of Charlie Brooker’s ‘Black Mirror’ on Ntfeilx and everyone seems pretty hyped. Twitter is a robust channel for high velocity fever but from what I’ve seen so far, I also am on that train. We are reminded that it is the series that changed the way we think about the future, about each other; about sex and technology, the family and afterlife - all set to a suitably creepy crooner - and my body is as ready as it ever shall be for the shake-inducing likes of last season’s ‘Arkangel’. Much of ‘Black Mirror’ can feel like a waking nightmare and I’m going to go out on a limb and say that it’s entirely deliberate and very functional. Life does sometimes feel like a waking nightmare and our imagination oft exceeds our grasp and I wouldn’t want to live like that for long. Roll on June 5th.
I may have mentioned that there is a new date for mixing the fucking record that is approaching very soon. I was discussing this with Teo last week and he assured me that everything was in hand and he had merely to obtain the tapes from Tim. That was about the same time I realised, soaked in arctic sweat, that I didn’t have a copy either and that all could be lost. A lot can happen in a year: Things crop up, stuff disappears, dreams are made and broken. I sent frantic messages to the studio, in desperate search of reassurance that we weren’t doomed and - with eternal gratitude to whatever higher being may be bending an ear - I received such news. Yesterday was the day I finally nabbed a copy of the recordings and the weather was fine and the beer was good and it was the best of days.
Luck is an ever underrated thing.
