‘100 Poems’ is the kind of legacy that all aspiring scribblers would wish to leave behind. It is, perhaps especially comforting to know that should you never get ‘round to actually putting the thing together yourself, someone else just might.

Seamus Heaney won the Whitbread Book Of The Year twice, for the love of Zeus

As someone who has an unmentionable number of notebooks stashed in various boxes/hampers/holes, I am thankful for this precedent. The collection - published by Faber & Faber - is a deeply personal selection of Heaney’s poems across a broad range from the entirety of his writing life, posthumously picked by those nearest and dearest to him. To say the man was the greatest poet of our age? Seamus Heaney won the Whitbread Book Of The Year twice, for the love of Zeus and one of those was awarded for his translation of Beowulf. Beowulf. I’ll let that sink in for a second, then you can go read ‘Wedding Day’ and I’ll sleep on your breast to the airport.

there’s every bit the chance you can break in a new pair of boots to it

Mudhoney have a new album out on Sub Pop (because where else) and if you wish The Stooges were still politically relevant then you’re in for a treat. That being said, you should clock that this isn’t an easy record to listen to, not by any means. ‘Digital Garbageopens with a review of the pending apocalypse before even beginning to tackle the likes of prevalent toxic social media, equally toxic mass media, the vacuous state of society as a whole and mass shootings. The music is as raw and pissed off as you might imagine and there’s every bit the chance you can break in a new pair of boots to it, should you be so inclined. Thankfully, Arm & co do eventually pull it all back from the brink right with album closer, ‘Oh Yeah’, a return to celebrating all that’s wild and free and loud and good with the world. Thank fuck.

they turn up years later with all kinds of nostalgic and “compromising” material squirrelled within

Remember those disposable cameras you used to buy in the airport - the ones you took really awful photos on but gave absolutely no cares about and just enjoyed your life instead? The ones now reserved for wedding tables and hen parties; those that occasionally…how do I put this? Go missing and then they turn up years later in time capsule fashion with all kinds of nostalgic and “compromising” material squirrelled within? Well they’re still very much a thing and can be found either with a reel of Kodak 35mm or Ilford 400, depending on your mood.

I’m pretty sure at least one of them has ended up in the pool

I took a couple to Mex last month had the best time not taking selfies. Having finally unpacked [no judgement], I chucked them to the Snappy Snaps lab for processing. Behold. I think the thing I like best - apart from the totally acceptable price point - is that I never worry about carrying one in my jacket pocket. More oft than not, I forget it’s even there until I see a picture and if anything happened to it, I wouldn’t be too vexed. I’m pretty sure at least one of them has ended up in the pool or been left in a car while said vehicle was pretending to be an oven and the results have never ceased to delight. Sure, you might not always get exactly what you wanted, but you might just get what you need.
