Salutations.

Welcome to our awkward corner of teh interwebs. If you have any interest whatsoever in books, music, film, photography, video games - whatever - then we should get along just fine. And If you can't behave.. be very, very clever.

All Your Apartheid

All Your Apartheid

We caught the indestructible Pieter-Dirk Uys’ one body show at Soho Theatre earlier this week. It was powerful stuff and possibly more essential now than ever, as real things always are. Should we decide to be honest at all, segregation in schools is still very much a thing and it’s very much a type of apartheid.

Pieter opened his father’s hallowed desk drawer and found a very particular letter within

Despite all that he and his Afrikaner father bumped heads while Uys was still an adolescent, like many father/son relationships, they did eventually make a good go of patching things up. A large part of 'The Echo Of A Noise' finds ground here, in reconciliation. There is part of that monologue in which Pieter opened his father's hallowed desk drawer and found a very particular letter within and dammit if there wasn’t something heart-shaped stuck in my eye.

Other people obviously liked it, which more often than not means my body rejects whatever foreign organ the masses are hawking.

‘Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino’ is great. I already knew that I liked it because, you know, I have ears and I’d heard it and fallen hard for the lounge lizard set. Science fiction is also very much in my trunk along with squishy synths, harpsichords and irreverent lyrics ripped from phone conversations.

All that being said, I didn’t know it would be just this good on vinyl. I guess I should have done, what with it being the fastest or best selling record on the black stuff in the last 26 years or something? I don’t know. Other people obviously liked it, which more often than not means my body rejects whatever foreign organ the masses are hawking. On this occasion, that body was absolutely correct. If that alone doesn’t signify the enduring power of both a fully fleshed, wholly realised record, I don’t know what does.

Vinyl has been back for some time now but this AM record lets all the cats out the bag.

Moreover, it is the sound of vinyl itself taking the door off its hinges and bursting, bug-eyed into your well lit living room, brandishing a candlestick holder. That metaphor might be somewhat layered. I’ll try to pin it down a little better or at least show my working: Vinyl has been back for some time now but this AM record lets all the cats out the bag. In a sense, it never really went anywhere and has just been the elephant in the room all along. Either that or it’s been skulking in the hallway with the lights off for the past couple of decades, only now to make a grand and much bemused, albeit dramatic entrance. With a candlestick holder. There, how was that?

I am totally down with Ellie being both a product of her fungal environment and shank-happy upbringing as well as a young woman

E3 is happening or has happened. All I know is that the ramifications of these tremors - the aftershocks, if you will - may be felt for a little while yet. I am totally down with Ellie being both a product of her fungal environment and shank-happy upbringing as well as a young woman who, you know, feels things that a young woman might feel. Also, there is no way in hell I would pick a bone with that girl.

The articles that flood onto the internet mid expo are both informative and somewhat scrappy. I pledge to remember the efforts of those beautiful girls and boys on the front line, wading though whatever ungodly number of arduous powerpoints there are this year, over-evangelical demos and zero sum interviews. You are the heroes we deserve.

CD Projeckt Red are preparing to take everyone and their grandmothers back to school.

There are most definitely diamonds in the rough to be had for sure, as the plethora of links here within shall testify. Apart from Naughty Dog’s magnum opus, FromSoftware are proving that they can absolutely do the thing everyone thought they had already done but hadn’t (recently) and CD Projeckt Red are preparing to take everyone and their grandmothers back to school. Seriously, go and watch that video with all haste and then meet me in the noodle shack. If there is a world in which I can play The Witcher but also be playing Fifth Element, that is where I choose to exist. Dreams is apparently also very real and very cool in the flesh, Bethesda are making something called Fallout 76 and there are more pirates as well, I guess? Some of them are also in space which was always going to be rad.

Oh, Destiny and Anthem have never actually been seen in the same room as one another at the same time. I’m calling it.

And Smash. Again.
