Love & VVords

'Marianne & Leonard: Words Of Love'…where to begin? It’s a movie that embraces its imperfections and imperfect characters because life is imperfect and complicated and messy. The Super 8 esque footage is stunning and stuffed to the brim with wonderful light which complements what is a suitably stunning soundtrack. It’s an honest movie and earns its ending well. You should go see it and fortify thyself. Well, try.

Golden Mago

If you fancy heading down that psychedelic rock/funk/noise hole then you should almost definitely start with ‘Tago Mago’ and try your level best to conduct your journey under the right conditions. This is a first UK press and it’s about as close to perfect as you would want it to be. The introduction to ‘Paperhouse’ is probably one of the most recognisable album openers of the genre from that period and you know you’re in for a ride.

Leowallsian

There are a wonderful variety of cats and their associated characters here - writers, editors, actors, directors, models, photographers, artists, painters, curators, columnists, dancers, teachers, home makers, metal sculptors, and even The Episcopal Bishop of New York City - often with their own unique, esoteric take on the moggy mode and appropriately ridiculous photos to accompany them. They are beautiful, yes but they are assholes in additon.

The Last Blonde

This is number 1006 of 2000 printed. It limited. Alasdair McLellan (he of ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ fame, Berlin 2002) is a fantastic portrait photographer and ‘Blondey 15-21’ follows the young, English skater over those formative years. While I don’t usually go in for what is technically fashion photography, there is a certain fragility in McLellan’s work and in that of Blondey himself. Nab one while you can.

Water Bully

Bully’s first album, ’Feels Like’ will cut you at volume. Album opener, ‘I Remember’ sets it out like so, with tight, dry drums, punk rock guitars, a mildly psychotic baseline and vocals that…female Kurt? All I can say, is that despite how long it took to finally get a copy into my eager, moist paws, I am very glad to have it with me now. It’s really personal and Alicia Bognanno gets real fast.

A Moxy Rogue

I was beginning to think I might never get to say this and really, truly mean it but Mr. Miller is mixing the record. As we speak. There was a moment when it appeared as though some files - some key files - may have been…missing. I did my best to distract an ailing mind but there were certainly one or two sleepless nights. Thankfully, Mr. Hamper is a notorious and meticulous hoarder and all is well.

100

We find ourselves at one singular hundred articles. With an estimated average of seven hundred words per strudel, that makes a total of approximately seventy thousand words, in all - the summary of a short and particularly weird novel - for you to paw and rummage through, like so many horny voles. I am here with you and I am amazed.

#CalendarDolls

The commercial calendar was originally a Victorian enterprise that Pirelli weaponised to maximum effect in the 1960s and ‘70s. Of course it’s true that attitudes have changed since then and that, for the most part, is a very good thing. However, these are the girls who adorned the walls of factories, offices, barracks, barber shops, garages and the inside of lorry cabs the world over and it is not entirely without merit.

The Griffin Cosmos

Brian made his name shooting album covers for everyone from Iggy Pop to Depeche Mode, Queen and Kate Bush to name but a few. We talked about his collection, about tour fatigue and we even discussed how his initial work necessitated Polaroid backs which ended up signed by their artistic subjects and most likely in the collection of any number of lucky assistants. The mind boggles.

Mama's Brownies

Andy was in the shop for a while not long ago, on his knees as though in twisted prayer, head firmly wedged behind the Rosita. Upon parting, he gifted me with this, the most sturdy of vintage box cameras. I’m not sure why I have inherited it but can only assume I have entered into some kind of pact with his unquiet god. That being the case, I see no reason to not source film for the thing and capture some souls.

Savage

He Who Does Bass made the initial introduction between myself and the band officially known as Savages. Their first album, ‘Silence Yourself’ is that kind of loud and originates from a corresponding layer of the Common Era. Jehnny Beth is a formidable lyrical and vocal driving force and the band’s general assertion that the record is to be played loud in the foreground is terribly good advice.

Altar o' The Fae

To satiate immediate queries, yes it’s more things that are strange and yes it might be better than season one. It’s also a thing that is about post traumatic stress, isn’t afraid to invert its stereotypical sexy lifeguard scene and has deep, pan-dimensional horror in spades but perhaps most importantly, it knows how to tell a joke and it knows when to get real.

Lizard Rising

We should definitely talk about Johnny Marr. It should pretty evident to anyone who saw that set on Saturday, that Marr is the performer we all deserve and he behaves like it too, which is nice. Bullshit is not a compulsory component for ‘This Charming Man’ and it wasn’t present at Glastonbury.

Eclectic Omens

‘Electric Ladyland’ is a record that commands a certain respect from anyone who’s laid ears on it, which should be everyone but I continue to be surprised and delighted whenever I find a body that ain’t familiar with Hendrix’ wild and weird freakout of an album. It is also true that I am never sure what fucking speed this thing runs at and I could be correct at 33 or we could be in some really strange Jimi & The Chipmunks territory at 45.

An Elton Summer

People seem to be deeply in love with the new Toy Story and I am absolutely one of them. I did laugh, I may even have cried and I certainly felt as though my pennies were well spent and you should go and see this fucking film. Pixar are seminal wizards of the heart, they will get you in your feel place and as far as these characters go, I could not be more invested. Also, Keanu Reeves. Again!

Philosopher's Stoned

Martin is also an alchemist and has made everything from films concerned with the existence of UFOs and their influence on the civilisations of the ancient world, to exhibitions which confirm that yes, he is indeed a witch. There was a broom, stood upright in the centre of a room and a burning candle balanced atop said stick. When the candle is blown out, the stick falls.

Ms Regard

Miss June (NZ) are something of a bang between Sonic Youth and Le Tigre. The Lady Ess suggested we try The Old Blue Last for some high quality impromptu noise. I made it about halfway up their crooked staircase before sanctioning whatever was going on in that room. Annabel Liddell is a presence to be reckoned with and the band are loud in the best of ways.

Excellent Three

E3 happened last week and the dust is still settling. We saw a load of reveals, gameplay and orchestral performances which is nice and even more things got release dates, some of them with more power to levitate your eyebrows offa your facade than others. There were also appearances from certain people to cause a heart to chorus.

Blue Boot Trinkets

Bob Dylan’s, ‘The Bootleg Series, Vol.1-3 is a beautiful collection of rarities on 5LP, featuring some songs you know, some songs you don’t and very little of anything you may have heard before. Laid out here are the whens, wheres, whys and hows of each thirty-eight never before officially released recordings. The piano demo tape of ‘The Times They A Changin’ shall lift you off your feet, like unto a column of air.

The 7th State

I’ve always said that science fiction is special because it’s about humanity. It is the relief into which we might throw, write and study our own natures that, quite often to our detriment, remain largely unchanged over time. This season of Black Mirror is exactly that. In it, we see ourselves reflected and it does not always make for a comfortable experience.
