Once Upon A Season

First there was the slow and worrying closure of my larynx. Then my eye attempted to perform semaphore and throbbed accordingly. Having decided that I didn’t really need to know what came next and feeling increasingly like butter scraped over too much bread, I made for the hills, ran with the lambs and caught some of what is known by them there locals as “big sky”.

The Shadow Angelic

Sekiro is the kind of thing upon which dynasties are founded and I feel like FromSoftware are actually getting their talons into my weak, reluctant hide with this one, in a way that they did not with the Soulsborne games. Those were interactions wherein I was more the mouse than the cat and I crawled beneath a sofa the very second their attention was diverted.

Love Steth’ + Kodak

Tim Miller and David Fincher’s new Netflix anthology is a genre defying masterclass in how to push the envelope for entertainment. It’s also some of the best contemporary sci fi available to human kind. Every episode different and also incredible? It is apparently possible and there isn’t an episode without stellar writing, knock ‘em dead visuals and a cast to kill for.

Big Damn Billion

‘The Big Lebowski’ has everyone from Dylan to Nina Simone on it and a really beautiful, storming flamenco rendition of ‘Hotel California’ by Gipsy Kings on side two that needs to be played all. the. time and if Paul Mann’s cover artwork never grants him a sainthood then I honestly don’t know what kind of world we live in.

CRUK

This particular outing is a very people focused affair and also it is a very British thing. That is, it is a body of work that explores the idea of Britishness with a level of satire that is over 8000! The irony of an in depth look at identity in the looming shadow of Brexit isn’t lost on Parr and the Gucci sponsorship might just be the most perfect thing in 2019.

St Glitter Is U

Considering this was published more than thirty years ago, the fact that we’re still drawing from that shockingly beautiful well is something. There is a command of depth of field and selection that only the dark room provides and is rarely found via the monitor. Our return to singular, meaningful experiences must be tied to this, as sure as death and taxes and “just one drink”.

Catnip Marvel

I thought ‘Wonder Woman’ was fine material and I think that ‘Captain Marvel’ might be up there too. The cat alone seals it for me. I did see one bright spark claiming that the emphasis was on “captain’ being a masculine premise but I can’t really converse with that person, any more than I can hold court with a spud.

Shrove Romuli

There are still those out there who have yet to see Netflix’s Oscar award-winning ‘Roma’. There are also apparently those who definitely know better that are trying to claim it’s not a film? I wish that I couldn’t figure out why but I guess that lemons aren’t mutually exclusive to dat shrove treat, in the same way that films are not exclusive to movie theatres.

Sculpture 99

‘Studies In Verberation’ features the work of reclusive French sculptor, ACM, which may or may not be an acronym for Actual Credible Messiah. The NYT called it ‘mouldering’ and I think that might be correct, in the best possible sense. I am obsessed and thoroughly up in their craw.

Nighthive

Basement Beehive’ landed on my mat late last year and it’s taken me a while to make my way through the trackless with any kind of conscious recall in tow. There are fifty-six tracks. 56. Take it either way, alpha or numerical and that’s a lot of tracks. Fortunately, you’re unlikely to have heard any of them before.

Happy Alchemist!

One year ago, we decided to put all of our things in one place, smash them together and see what happened. The result is pretty much what you’re looking at: A little lit, some travel, buckets of vinyl, a liberal sprinkling of film, far too much TV and hella video games.

Forgiving Nadia

‘I Go To Sleep’ was a pretty great song by The Kinks. It’s what people call a “deep cut”. It then became a pretty great song by The Pretenders, followed at some point by a somewhat divisive version by Sia. More recently, it is a pretty great song by British singer-songwriter, Anika. It’s been stuck in my head for a week or more now and most of this is probably just my very circuitous way of telling you to go and watch ‘Russian Doll’ on Nettphlicks.

Lobe?

Today is both a Thursday and also the Advent of Cupid’s Carnal Rites. Aren’t you the luckiest little biscuit? Maybe you don’t care. Perhaps you have someone else who does care and that is both a good and funny thing, fraught with sweat and elbows.

Battletodds Advance

‘Alita: Battle Angel’ is a treat. I was initially confused by the release date as for some reason it appears our American cousins aren’t getting it until The Day Of Love, also known as February 14th. We’ve actually had it here in Drowntown since last Wednesday but no-one really seemed sure as to when we might catch a glimpse of this angelic beast.

600 Slugs Below

It was only natural that I would be drawn like a fuzzy, ill-formed moth to Jim Guthrie’s haunted score for Capybara’s ‘Below’. He worked on the thing for five years. Possibly using a PS1 and MTV Music Maker. I find myself somewhat in awe.

This Nun Of Mine

We’re this far into EA’s agreement with Disney and we have only…two distinctly average [at best] games to show for it? My only conclusion is that Disney gives no cares about the games market and is sleeping on a monster trick with a large number of zeros attached to it.

AMST

I have done my level best to meet you on the field and thus fall the results. I picked the dream of the drop for your discerning consideration. This is the place in which you Asked Me Some Things. And you have only me to blame.

Krunchy Kat

Leila Del Duca’s intrepid Alarm Cat is known as Cassius but he could also be known as Felix. As of January, you can expect my pen to paper for the first official book in the chronicle of ‘Felix The Plagiaristic Musical Cat Hunts Communist Sex Goats On The Moon’.

Nox Bros.

Most people I know that Switch have Smash fever. It tends to be an Ultimate flavoured affliction but there are also those with their CRT shaped crystal balls out, looking back at the likes of Melee and even so far as the dark, still kicking ’64 scene.
