Philosopher's Stoned

Martin is also an alchemist and has made everything from films concerned with the existence of UFOs and their influence on the civilisations of the ancient world, to exhibitions which confirm that yes, he is indeed a witch. There was a broom, stood upright in the centre of a room and a burning candle balanced atop said stick. When the candle is blown out, the stick falls.

Ms Regard

Miss June (NZ) are something of a bang between Sonic Youth and Le Tigre. The Lady Ess suggested we try The Old Blue Last for some high quality impromptu noise. I made it about halfway up their crooked staircase before sanctioning whatever was going on in that room. Annabel Liddell is a presence to be reckoned with and the band are loud in the best of ways.

Excellent Three

E3 happened last week and the dust is still settling. We saw a load of reveals, gameplay and orchestral performances which is nice and even more things got release dates, some of them with more power to levitate your eyebrows offa your facade than others. There were also appearances from certain people to cause a heart to chorus.

Blue Boot Trinkets

Bob Dylan’s, ‘The Bootleg Series, Vol.1-3 is a beautiful collection of rarities on 5LP, featuring some songs you know, some songs you don’t and very little of anything you may have heard before. Laid out here are the whens, wheres, whys and hows of each thirty-eight never before officially released recordings. The piano demo tape of ‘The Times They A Changin’ shall lift you off your feet, like unto a column of air.

The 7th State

I’ve always said that science fiction is special because it’s about humanity. It is the relief into which we might throw, write and study our own natures that, quite often to our detriment, remain largely unchanged over time. This season of Black Mirror is exactly that. In it, we see ourselves reflected and it does not always make for a comfortable experience.

Popgate

We are going to see Nirvana play at Reading tonight. We shall be at The Institute in East London, in 2019 at a secret cinema type thing that The Lady Ess found and convinced me to attend in less time than it took to finish her sentence. Also, one third of ticket profits go to the Campaign Against Living Miserably in honour of you know who.

Kingsmon

Nintendawgs are dropping a hot fifteen minutes of delicious details pertaining to ‘Pokemon Sword & Shield’ tomorrow. I shall admit that I am eager to see what they have hidden in the moist folds of their catch 'em all robes, particularly in light of this generation’s relocation to a green and pleasant land. I am also piqued by their PR terminology that stipulates they have work to share related to their “researching [of] this new region.”

Six Stone Manga

The 50th Anniversary UK Edition of The Rolling Stones 1969 LP contains no less than two number one singles. It’s also one of seven thousand, which sounds like a big number but there are X million Stones fans out there who would go full-on ‘The Perfection’ with a meat cleaver just to get their one remaining mitt on a copy.

Jean-Luc Pino Fun

There was simply too much stuffs to fit onto last Thursday’s plate of 35mm and so the above is offered for seconds, if you will. There is an all-out Blondie shot of Ms. R in Regent’s Park, another of Andy - Technomancer Extraordinaire - and a few late night tales for good measure.

YWNHMH

The Bataclan shootings in November of 2015 caused an infinite degree of pain around the world, not least for those in attendance that evening, their families and friends. Antoine’s assertion, that those responsible for the murder of Hélène, his wife, would not have his hate or the hatred of their infant son, is an unfathomably dense, totemic thing. It is poetic in the most terrible and perfect of ways.

The Black Year Tape

We are reminded that it is the series that changed the way we think about the future, about each other; about sex and technology, the family and afterlife - all set to a suitably creepy crooner - and my body is as ready as it ever shall be for the shake-inducing likes of last season’s ‘Arkangel’.

Detector IV

A certain Phil Stocker dropped by the shop last week, just in time for golden hour and caught the Rosita at her finest. There were also a couple of snaps of books and some stupid speakers made by Grundig in 1952. No one’s ever been crazy enough to attempt the like since and few have captured them with such phenomenal grain.

Tucadewookie

It must be true that there is an alternate, lesser galaxy in which there are no hairy co-pilots of the Falcon and it’s basically just kit bashing, some bullshit about midichlorians, and a whole buncha pew pews. There are other aliens in the wars concerning stars, for sure but I like that wookie and Mayhew made the role his own.

Her Virgin Filly

Season two of ‘She-Ra and the Princesses of Power’ on Nootfox is one of those overwhelmingly positive things that I always find time for and if I can’t find the time, I make time, concocted directly from raw chronoplasm: Two portions of just a minute, a dash of rain check then stir twice, counter clockwise. That’s my recipe anyhow. You do you.

A Penny Brew

Bitches Brew’ by Miles Davis is a crazed affair. It is the most acidic of jazz so that needs must be your bag before venturing in, as something with this much mood on LP is made for a very specific room. However, those who do shall be richly rewarded.

Jonesing

Without us even noticing, Alien hit 40 years old and someone decided to do something about it. ‘Night Shift’ is the third in a series of six shorts commissioned to mark the big, gross space wasp’s birthday and it’s…good? There are certain camera movements that don’t quite stick the landing but honestly, if you want to go back to LV 426 then this is terrifyingly close.

Star Brawls

I am a mathematically impossible one hundred and one percent in the room for their western-sci-fi-bounty-hunting extravaganza. John Favreau and Pedro Pascal seems like a strong blend and I’m wondering how much this Disney+ deal is going to cost me. Anything with more IG-88 please.

Once Upon A Season

First there was the slow and worrying closure of my larynx. Then my eye attempted to perform semaphore and throbbed accordingly. Having decided that I didn’t really need to know what came next and feeling increasingly like butter scraped over too much bread, I made for the hills, ran with the lambs and caught some of what is known by them there locals as “big sky”.

The Shadow Angelic

Sekiro is the kind of thing upon which dynasties are founded and I feel like FromSoftware are actually getting their talons into my weak, reluctant hide with this one, in a way that they did not with the Soulsborne games. Those were interactions wherein I was more the mouse than the cat and I crawled beneath a sofa the very second their attention was diverted.

Love Steth’ + Kodak

Tim Miller and David Fincher’s new Netflix anthology is a genre defying masterclass in how to push the envelope for entertainment. It’s also some of the best contemporary sci fi available to human kind. Every episode different and also incredible? It is apparently possible and there isn’t an episode without stellar writing, knock ‘em dead visuals and a cast to kill for.
